Uncle Jack Charles

Writer's picture: The Autistic Realm Australia Inc. The Autistic Realm Australia Inc.

Uncle Jack Charles has died this morning. On country and with family.

He could often be seen at theatres and around Melbourne.

We will never see his like again.

First Nations Elder and advocate.

Born here.

Child of countless generations of ancestors.

A member of the Stolen Generation. He made it to 79 years of age. Old, but not old enough.

Co-founder of Australia's first Indigenous-led theatre group, Nindethana in Melbourne, in the 1970s. Esteemed actor and writer. Uncle Jack was our countryman, a man who contributed to Australian culture and life. Our country and culture and life.

This is a sad loss, and so soon after Uncle Archie Roach.

*Name used with permission of the family as noted in media reports.

We at TARA acknowledge the Traditional Owners of Country, and that operation and administration of this organisation takes place on the stolen, unceded land of First Nations.

We recognise the Traditional Owners' continuing connection to land, waters and culture and we pay our respects to their Elders past, present and emerging.

Many thanks to Diedre from Blackfulla Revolution for their support and advice on our acknowledgement statement.

As marginalised minorities with a different story, but both with a long history of violence and oppression perpetrated against us, we stand together.
